Riding breeches, hip and abdominal fat, angular arms or a double chin; there are fat deposits that are resistant to sports programs and diets. Thanks to Boston dermatologists Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson, however, there is now a non-invasive method that can efficiently target fat deposits in these areas and virtually melt away fat deposits. Not with heat, however, but by targeted cooling of the corresponding body part. The two scientists discovered that fat cells react much more sensitively to temperature fluctuations than the surrounding tissue. This insight led to the development of the cryolipolysis procedure, also known colloquially as “fat freezing”. The name says it all; “fat freezing” makes fat cells jitter and vanish!

Fat cells crystallize and break down on their own

During treatment, an applicator is attached to the desired area of the body and cooled down to minus 8 – 11 degrees. Devices from well-known manufacturers are also equipped with patented safety technologies that constantly control the temperature and to prevent damage to the surrounding tissue. The controlled cooling lowers the temperature of the treated fat cells to the point of crystallisation. These “frozen” fat cells then undergo a process known as apoptosis. This process is akin to a “cellular self-destruction programme”—some fat cells perish due to the cooling and are naturally eliminated from the fatty tissue. This process, known as cell death, is actively initiated by the cells themselves and is an integral part of their metabolism. The process is precisely controlled to ensure that neighbouring cells remain unaffected. The fat layer’s thickness decreases as the fat cells undergo cell death and are metabolised.

Long-lasting results through a natural mechanism.

The time it takes for results to become visible after a cryolipolysis treatment is individual and varies depending on the area of the body treated. As the cells undergo natural metabolism, the results are not always visible immediately. Most patients see noticeable changes around three months after treatment. Established manufacturers such as Allergan carry out clinical studies that prove that cryolipolysis can help to sustainably reduce fat deposits that cannot be fully controlled with exercise and a healthy diet. *However, such treatment is in no way a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
